A natural gum exuded from wounds in the leaves of several species of trees of the genus Aloe (family Liliaceae) distributed in various geographic zones (Africa, West Indies and South East Europe).
Aloe is available in different forms: from mat or lightly bright brownblackish masses with greenish tints to brown-greenish powders. It is soluble in warm alcohol, partially soluble in warm water and is generally used for the production of coloured varnishes for musical instruments and old furniture and for burnishing silver.
